The quilt
Well, I thought I would be able to get Gracie’s quilt in the morning mail, but lil pill did not cooperate and was up half the night plastered to me. So I just have the backing to sew on and the corners of the binding, and that should go relatively fast. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, especially with the materials I was using (flannel wipes for the quilt face), there are a few lumps and bumps in it and it definitely is not perfect. Nor is it meant to be!
Here is an explanation of the quilt from my perspective:
The quilt face is made of 24 soft flannel wipes, hand dyed lavendar. Lavendar was Gracie’s favorite color so of course the color was where I started. The wipes were handmade by a mom on mothering.com, and I thought the cotton flannel was perfect, since it is so soft you would want to use it on your first baby (Gracie was Ging’s first). They are uneven in size because life is full of ups and downs and nothing is quite the way you expect it to be…nothing is perfect!
There are 6 hearts embroidered on each 4 patch, signifying each of the Shamrocks that have faithfully posted before, during, and after Gracie came into the world; Phyllis, Rachel, Brooke, Sara, Robyn, and Denise. The hearts are each cut around the outside with a sort of fringe effect, meaning that our hearts will never be the same since this happened. Each heart is different, as each of the Shamrocks are different.
The embroidery on the quilt is of 2 butterflies and a baby butterfly on their flight around the quilt. This signifies Ging and Steve, whose flight is still continuing, and baby Gracie, whose flight was brief but never forgotten.
I “signed” the quilt by embroidering a 3 leaf shamrock and the year.
The binding and backing of the quilt is white with multicolored butterflies. Gracie loved butterflies, and she will forever be our little butterfly.
Hopefully I will be able to finish the quilt before practice tonight. I will post a picture when I’m through.
That’s it for now!
