Weekend Warrior

Ever watch that Weekend Warrior show? Well, I felt a compulsion to do something about the sad sorry state of this little place. So I got out the paint and went to town! It took me 2 weekends to finish everything.

Here is my only seating area, before:

The first thing you’ll notice is the very sad plant, which is desperately trying to find the light. There’s a little running joke in my family about my black thumb, but I do pretty well once the plants are outdoors. So I added some more potting soil and a couple of different cuttings of plants, and moved the whole thing outside. Doesn’t it look much happier?

Next, the lack of seating itself. A chair and a half is fine for the two of us, but if anyone else comes inside they have to sit on the floor. Hmm…Salvation Army had the perfect solution (it’s not as yellow in real life):

I’m still working on the art piece for behind the couch, but that’s another weekend. And I have all the supplies so it won’t cost a dime. Woot!
Now let’s look at the other side of the room-the desk/DVD/catchall place:

Pretty sad, isn’t it? I wish I could say you caught me on a bad day, but nope…that’s normal. The problem is that this room has to be everything for everyone, and there’s no room for a standard desk. I’ve been looking for a corner desk for awhile, but there was nothing in my price range. I guess Friday was my lucky day, because the Salvation Army also had this, which I’m planning to paint flat black:

Next I decided to put back up the shelves for the TV/DVD player, to make a little cleaner wall (Yep, that’s America’s Next Top Model on the tv):

Then I changed out these dingy (this picture is with all the lights on!) green curtains that didn’t go all the way to the floor:

With these:

And took a free bookcase that was going to be put in the trash:

Sanded, and painted a very thin coat of black:

Then got lil pill involved and painted 2 thin coats of white:

He really, really likes painting furniture. He’s probably going to be a graffiti artist when he grows up:

Then sanded it to distress:

Touched it up a bit, and made it my picture/movies/catchall near the front door:

I also purchased a rug from overstock.com, which will be coming through the mail…and I need to get some white pillows and finish the art piece for the couch area. But all in all, I’m pretty happy with the way my lil place is shaping up!

The best part about this entire room makeover is that I spent less than $100, even after paying for the furniture to be delivered (I’d like to see that couch fit in the myo!) and the rug. I’ve gone back and forth…that $100 could’ve gone to savings, or charity, or to paying off debt. However, (and thank God I have the luxury of doing this at all), I really feel that the atmosphere we create around us influences mood. My home is the haven for me and lil pill.

Lil pill has been sick all weekend, but his overnight with Mr. A went really well and he only woke up 2x. Once he realized that I was coming back, and that he wouldn’t have to live with daddy, he was fine. I was really sweatin it, but again I needlessly worried. Anyway, in case you wonder why I’m posting on a Sunday when any good Southern girl should be in church, I can’t take lil pill out until he gets better. :) Enjoy your Sunday!

Wowza! You were busy! Don’t paint the desk black, paint it a COLOR! (I heart color). I really like the bookshelf, and someone was gonna toss it? Crazy!

I read some past posts, too! I’m glad Lil Pill did well with Mr. A, glad you had some you time. Also good to hear about the circus…BB is only 3 (well, in a month) and I have been thinking about the circus, but since Lil Pill is older and still melted down, we might put if off a year or two. After all, that stuff is EXPENSIVE!

I’ve been tryinig to decide what to do with our living room since I disposed of the biohazard recliner. I feel inspired now :) I love that corner desk!

Thanks Bah, I love it too!

Bella, the only color I really want to paint it other than black is fire engine red. And I’m just not in the place to do it…plus with a green couch-yikes. So for now it’s going to be black or gray. Yeah, if we had gone to the circus at say 10:30 am or 5:30, it would’ve been fine, but I would say it’s pretty advanced for a kid to sit through for 3 hours.

Mahala-isn’t it so cool when you’ve been looking for something and voila! there it is all of a sudden? I couldn’t believe what a steal I got on this desk.
